Introduction A librarian is a trained personnel that is in charge of
library activities such as selecting, acquiring and disseminating of
information. Librarians are information managers that help library users meet
their information needs.

The job responsibilities of librarians differ depending on
the type of library, the size of the library, the rank of the librarian and the
area of specialization. The following are general responsibilities of a
librarian:
Collection development.This involves selecting, ordering
and acquiring library materials.
Cataloging and classification of library materials. Creating
and updating the library’s catalogue.
Providing information literacy to library users.
Rendering reference services.
Create and manage library’s database and all electronic
resources.
General management of the library.
Career Prospects
A trained librarian can work with any organization that has
a library. There are opportunities for librarians to work in school libraries,
academic libraries, public libraries, national libraries and special libraries.
Librarians can specialize in subject areas like law (Law
Librarian) and medical (Medical Librarian).
Also, librarians can specialize in library activities such
reference librarian, serial librarian, technical librarian, electronic resource
librarian, and so on.
Qualification of a
Librarian
A degree in library science OR library and information
science.
Master’s and Doctorate degrees are added advantage to grow
in the profession especially for librarians in academic libraries.
Registered member of Librarians Registration Council of
Nigeria (LRCN).
Skills Required of
a Librarian

Customer- oriented skills.
Ability to use information communication technologies and
library softwares.
